لكم دينكم و لي دين

When people talk about a muslim becoming an Atheist or whatever, generally they're sad.
Tell them it's a Saudi and all fucking hell will break loose.

I mean, it makes perfect sense to me. I understand how, among our society, this conventionalism most people call 'our' religion gets tiresome.

Except many people have not been taught that this is conventionalism and not Islam, and that is where the problem lies.
In my opinion, the most dangerous thing in the world to one's faith, is mixing it with tradition. Many of the things that we practice here are forced upon us under the guise of Islam. It's devastating. You start questioning everything you believe in, and eventually you start to lose your faith.
And no, I do not believe faith is a stupid thing to have, because I do not believe that it is 'blind faith.'
Faith is not blind. I know what I believe in, what I have faith in, and it exsists because I feel it and it is there and I know.
And it doesn't make me brain-washed, stupid, or naive.
It makes me a believer.
And I have a right to beileve just as (dare I say it) others have a right not to. Saudi or otherwise.
Oh, and I heart the Shea.
Can't we all just get along?

Yea mixing traditions with faith is almost like religious suicide.
I really dont know what to say about the Shia. I disagree with what they believe in, but it doesnt mean I would go about condemning them for it. I know a couple of guys studying in my college who are Shia and I dont treat them any different from any of my other friends.

I'll be honest, I get sad too when i hear about a muslim turning athiest or converting to another religion. I feel that people have failed to show what true Islam is all about, by mixing it with cultural/traditional ideologies with ultimately cause other people to resent faith and ultimately turn away from it.
May Allah protect us all.

Good post. One of the BIGGEST problems in Islam today is that people confuse their culture with religion, and just as often assume their version of Islam is best.

I have gotten into several heated debates with Saudis who insist that their version of Islam is best.

When pressed as to why the most vapid answers usually come like, "we are the home of Islam."

I think that is exactly why things are a shame in Saudi. Yes, you are the "home of Islam." So you should not brag, rather ask yourself why such a twisted distortion of the religion reigns supreme in Saudi? Ask yourself why corrupt and unIslamic rulers reign in Saudi?

I know I am biased, but this is why I believe that converts, if they try really hard, have the best chance of approaching true Islam. They have the ability to come to the religion without culture, without tradition and all of the baggage that brings with it.

Too bad many of us converts stear towards extremism or copying the very same traditions and culture that steers other Muslims astray.

You really had no chance. Very few people born in a Muslim country and raised as a Muslim will ever escape their faith.
But atleast you recognize that alot of what goes on with ANY religon, whether it is Christianity, Islam, or the fucking Jehova's Witnesses, is bullshit.
