Quit Trying To "Save" Me.

I hate it when random people come up to me and ask me to cover my face.
It doesn't matter whether or not they were 'polite'.
It offends me.
I might be someone who believes that covering one's face is a Bid3a. They should all consider that before asking anyone to potentially do something they don't believe in.
How would all those people feel if I went around asking them/their wives to take their veils off because I personally think it's haram? (I'm not saying I do.)
However, I have noticed that veiled women commit Bid3as as a result of wearing a veil. They pray with it on, for example.

And more importantly; It's no one's business but mine what I dress like. I will not take these people's advice, nor will I ever appreciate it.

And NO, you/your country are/is NOT BETTER THAT ME/MY COUNTRY.
We all know everywhere on earth has it's problems, an I can guarantee you; I think all your problems are much worse than mine, so get over yourselves.

...

SAUDI ARABIA DOES NOT SUCK.
And NO ONE has a right to say it does.

Just wanted to quote Ubergirl87's previous posts here.

Especially non-Saudis.

do you think that covering the face is bid3ah?
don't you know or read quraan,if you don't want to cover your face then it is ok it is a personal choice but don't go and say that it is bid3ah,what gets me when some make their own islamic dogma, you either take it dear or you leave it,it is not a matter of pick and leave.and for the people who tell you to cover it is a part of the الامر بالمعروف well i agree that some people have a strange way of advising other people but again that dose not mean you can call it bid3ah you can say i don't believe in it.
freak of nature, well i think that he has no right to ask you to close it off but again if the music was that loud you have to respect that it is annoying to the people esp if you are in a public place ,you can practise your right to listen to music, but not on their account, you can always keep it within limit.

oh-my-god. I-love-you.

Thats the exact same way I feel! I hate the way they act as if they are doing you a favor, by telling you to cover your face. I mean..what if the person you are telling to cover doesnt follow the same mathhab as you?

And it seems like they all have this same story about some shaab who always '3azils girls, but when he sees a girl thats covered "properly", yista7y ykalimha. Men al i7tiram, y3ny.lmao.

what a great idea. everybody who wants to say here something somebody not likes is branded as american and asked to go to hell. i think this desert shield, he or she, just wants to point out that übergirl87 first writes that nobody should criticize saudi and then criticizes saudi herself? yeeeeees and don't we have blogs in order to exchange viewpoints? then we should listen to each other and not ask the first person who doesn't think exactly like you to go to hell and shut up. maybe that's your idea of dialogue. but not mine. go to paradise yourself :).

Firstly: I am NOT critisizing Saudi Arabia. I am expressing my veiws on IDIVIDUALS (who are not all Saudis, for you information) Who think their relegious beliefs overrule everyone else's. And do you see how you hated when a non-American *supposedly* said something you don't like about your country?
Think about it.

I think by now you have come to the conclusion that YOU are infact the hypocrite.
People from all over the world are allowed to say whatever about Saudi Arabia, but talking about America is wrong, huh?

Secondly: "I might be someone who believes that covering one's face is a Bid3a"
Please notice the 'might'.
I would apreciate it if you took the time to actually READ what I've written before you accuse me of not reading the Quraan.
O ba3deen ya a5y ilAmr bilMa3roof wal Nahy 3an Ilmonkar is not some stranger's responsibility. Nor is it the Hay2a's.
Advice is supposed to be given by people you know and trust. Not people off the street.

That would bother me too.

But where are the positive views on Saudi people/culture ubergirl? I'd like to read something about what you do like in Saudi Arabia. You seem to be constantly angry about your experiences living there.

WTF IS THIS DEBATE GOIN' ON HERE?

SOME PEOPLE HERE SEEM TO THINK DESERT SHIELD IS AMERICAN. HOW THE HELL SHOULD WE KNOW OR CARE? HE COULD BE SAUDI, OR SHE, OR CHINESE OR WHATEVER, EVEN AN AMERICAN, OR EXPAT. AND IF YOU READ WHAT DESERT SHIELD WROTE ABOVE YOU CAN SEE THIS NICKNAME AIN'T BANNIN' ANYTHIN'. THIS NICK JUST WANTS TO WRITE SOMETHIN'. WHAT'S THE MATTER WITH THAT?

I AIN'T GOOD THAT ALL THE TIME SOMEONE WRITES HERE AN OPINION WHICH SOMEONE DOESN'T LIKE, WE SEE COMMENTS LIKE GO TO HELL INSTEAD OF THAT'S YOUR POINT BUT MINE AIN'T THE SAME BECAUSE AND THEN WHY IT'S DIFFERENT?

BUT LABELIN' ANYONE WHO DOESN'T THINK 150% LIKE YOU AS AMERICAN, HYPOCRITE & WORTH GOIN' TO HELL IS NASTY & STUPID. IF YOU WANT TO HAVE A BLOG WHERE EVERYBODY THINKS LIKE YOU, WHY NOT JUST BLOCK ALL COMMENTS AND BUY THE WWW.UBERGIRL87FANCBLUB.COM ADDRESS AND BLOG THERE?

THE ONLY PEOPLE I'VE SEEN TRYIN' TO BAN ANY OPINION HERE ARE THOSE WHO DON'T LIKE EVEN 1% CRITICIZM OF ANYTHIN' SAUDI, NO AMERICAN HERE IS TRYIN' TO BAN BAD THINGS SAID ABOUT AMERICA.

kareem ROCKS!

I am American who has traveled (and lived) all over the world. One of the most annoying things about being American is having to listen to the many strong and negative opinions about America. The hardest part for me is the fact that I agree with many (but not all) of the criticisms -- yet, many seem to think think that because I am American I need to be educated about what is wrong with my country--when I know all too well what is wrong with it since I live here. I am wondering if this is what irritates ubergirl so much.

For the record: I am against the war in Iraq. I think that Bush and Rumsfeld and Cheney and Rice et all should be brought up on war crimes before an international court for what was done in Abu Ghraib prison and Guatanamo. I think the president of the US should be impeached for illegally wiretapping the phones of US citizens without a search warrant. I think that the Bushes long ago sold their soul to the Al Saud family to get in on all the oil $$ (the friendship between the Bushes, the Bin Laden family and the Saudi Royals goes way way back). I could go on and on.

So you see, there is no way I would ever say that the US is the best country in the world. I love it in the way that any human being loves their home, but that said, I think that blind patriotism on anyone's part, whether or not they are american or not is a form of mental illness.

I also find American Christian fundamentalists to be irritating and potentially as dangerous as the Saudi religious police. Having lived in Riyadh (I am a nurse, an honored profession in most places but considered "too lowly" for any Saudi to do which is why all the nurses in Saudi are foreign nationals), I am all too familiar on a first-hand basis with the muttawa, who loved to wave their sticks at my red hair and yell in english "woman, cover your hair!"

I like to read this blog because I am interested in what is going on in a country that I lived in. I actually meant to post a question, but got distracted by all the comments. When I lived in Saudi, no Saudi woman ever dared to leave the house without covering her face entirely. In fact, she could count on getting "reprimanded" by the muttawa if they saw that she had removed the outer veil which also covered her eyes, for example, to see merchandze in a store better. Many Saudi women I knew were angry just at the fact that they had to cover their eyes in the first place (I know I wouldn't be too happy about being forced to walk around half-blind). Has all this changed? Is it now possible for a saudi women to walk around in a Riyadh mall (and I don't mean the women-only malls) without any cover on her face at all? If this is true, then there has been progress.

Covering ones face is Bid3a. There is no Islamic law that says a woman must hide her face. If your faces were meant to be covered then why did Allah give you one in the first place?

Curious George I must say that is the stupidest logic ever. Good gave me a dick, should I walk around with that flapping around?

I don't agree with covering the face, but that's just my personal view.

I only ask people who attack me personally to go to hell.
If you don't like me or my blog you're more than welcome to never visit it again.

Yes, now you can walk around in malls with out covering your face or hair, even.
Just don't get caught by the Muttawas, lol.
I realized I assumed desert shield is American, I appologize.

Kareem rocks: "LABELIN' ANYONE WHO DOESN'T THINK 150% LIKE YOU AS AMERICAN, HYPOCRITE & WORTH GOIN' TO HELL IS NASTY & STUPID"
Where did I label someone who doesn't think like me that?
Please don't accuse me of things you don't quite understand.
I was reffering to how people only supported me when I was angry at the way things are.
I started getting Emails from non-Saudis talking about how horrible Saudi Arabia is. These were people who have never been here.
I made a post about how it's wrong to diss an entire country based on my angry posts.
I didn't say ANYTHING about America!
What is wrong with you!?
And if I truly labelled people ANYTHING because they didn't think like me.. I'd have deleted your comment (and many others) Mr.Hot Shot.

Anon, I don't believe anyone would want to see your dick. It would cause way too much laughter. Maybe they should behead you for being a Kaffir.

As for Ubergirl not wearing a veil, good for her. It takes a strong woman go "Rage against the Machine" especially in Saudi.

Wow. ubergirl! There has been progress for women since I left.

I applaud your courage and other young women like you who have the courage to stand up and speak out and act out of personal conviction! My sense when I was there (and I had the opportunity to get to know and work with a wide variety of Saudi women) is that the future of Saudi is in the hands of the women, particularly young women who are smart, well educated and very very feisty! I wasn't so impressed with the young men (lol!) who seemed to be largely immature and lazy (though there were exceptions, but that was my general impression).

In the west, women were never "granted" the right to self-automony and full rights as citizens, they had to fight long and hard for them over many generations. My grandmother turned 21 the year that women finally got the right to vote in this country (1918). Her mother personally took her and all of her sisters (she came from a large family of 12 children) who were over 21 to the polling booths and instructed them that they must always vote, and to never take their hard earned rights for granted. I sensed a similar sentiment among Saudi women when I was there, they knew that change would not happen over night, and also seemed to understand that they would never be "given" rights, that they would have to find innovative and interesting ways to fight for them. Having the courage to risk the wrath of the muttawa is a small but powerful step.

btw--what happens when you are caught by the muttawa without a face or head covering? I ask because I remember being incredibly frightened of them, it seemed as though they could get away with just hauling you off to jail. I always carried a headscarf in my bag so that I could just whip it out and throw it over my head if they came after me. And I kept my eyes on the ground while they yelled--eye contact seemed to enrage them even more.

Me: please explain to the class how praising ubergirl for not covering her face is a stupid comment. Some people are illerate aka the ME person.

trust me, nothing you do is enough for those type of people. i wear the scarf AND cover my face, yet i have people coming up to me telling me that i should wear a plainer abaya when i wear an abaya that has some design on its sleeves.

sometimes, you can never win. argh!
